French PM sparks controversy with 35-hour week remark

PARIS (Reuters) - French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault delighted business and angered labor leaders on Tuesday by suggesting the 35-hour work week was not sacrosanct, although he stressed the Socialist government had no plans to change it.

The comment came ahead of a government-commissioned report to be unveiled next Monday on proposals to boost the flagging industrial competitiveness of Europe's second largest economy.

The shift to a shorter work week was the flagship reform of the Socialist government that ruled France during a boom at the end of the 1990s. Many employers say it bloated labor costs and blunted their ability to compete in world markets.

Asked if it could make sense to revert to a working week of 39 hours, Ayrault told Le Parisien newspaper: "Nothing's taboo. I'm not dogmatic ... The only thing that worries me is that France has broken down and we need to restart with the engine firing on all cylinders."

Ayrault, whose five-month-old government has been criticized for a string of communications gaffes, later clarified his remarks after business and union leaders seized on them as signaling a major policy shift.

"I said nothing was taboo. But this is simply not a cause the government advocates. There will be no rolling back on the 35-hour week because it is not the cause of our difficulties," he told French radio.

Laurence Parisot, head of the Medef employers federation, had earlier hailed Ayrault's initial comments as "excellent news" while trade union leaders were up in arms.

"If the government tries to take on the 35-hour week, it will run into us on the road," Francois Chereque, head of the large CFDT labor union warned.

The gradual introduction of the shorter working week was intended as a socially progressive move and to encourage employers to hire more staff by making higher overtime costs kick in after an employee had worked 35 hours in a given week.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the conservative president unseated in May by Socialist Francois Hollande, offered overtime tax breaks to lessen the impact of the measure but did not try to repeal it.

US Navy tests first 11meter missilefiring sea drone video

Advances in unmanned military tools and vehicles have come on leaps and bounds, but, until now, we haven't seen a weapon firing drone operating in the seas. A recent test taking part offshore near Maryland saw several missiles launched from a new remote-controlled inflatable-hulled ship. While the Navy has used drones before for mine clearing and other defensive tasks, the small boat (similar to that pictured above) is the first experiment to involve true offensive capabilities. The almost zodiac-like craft has been an ongoing project over recent years, and contains a fully automated system which the Navy calls a "Precision Engagement Module" which uses an Mk-49 mounting with a dual missile launcher manufactured by Rafael. The hope is that such vehicles could patrol the coastline, or serve as a first defense against pirates, and other such small, fast-moving seafaring dangers. If you want to catch it in action, head past the break for the video, but don't be fooled. While it might look like a series of misses, the Navy claims this is just a trick of the camera angle, with all six missiles apparently making contact.

Aussies 4 Obama give the Australian perspective on why the U.S. should re-elect Obama

A group of politically active Australians have declared their support for the re-election of President Obama.

(PRWEB) October 29, 2012

A group of politically active Australians have declared their support for the re-election of President Obama.

Spokesman for the group, Joe Wigg said that President Obama has done a commendable job of promoting American interests in the world without resorting to the ?bull in the china shop? approach of the last U.S. President.

?President Obama inherited two ugly wars that are collapsing the economy from George W. Bush,? Joe Wigg said ?and four years later the Iraq war is over, the Taliban has been largely de-fanged in Afghanistan, and the U.S. economy is slowly building up to steam.?

?Here in Australia we have trouble understanding why the people of America could even think of electing a rich person with a history of tax avoidance. Do Romney supporters think he will remove the tax breaks from the rich and give them to the poor people who really need them?

?Mit Romney has also promised to increase U.S. military spending which means more international destabilisation, more homelessness, more needy, and less respect from a world sick and tired of arrogant U.S. militarism.

?Our group of Aussies has made a comedy skit outlining why we think U.S. citizens should re-elect President Obama. We invite all Americans to watch our skit at http://www.youtube.com/Aussies4Obama. We also invite U.S. citizens to read our website aussies4obama.com to try to understand the difference between a truly democratic society, and one controlled by its richest citizens.

?Ghandi once said ?the truest measure of a society was how it treated its neediest citizens?.

?In this respect we think America can do far better; and President Obama is the right man for the job.?

UBS shares jump at prospect of 10,000 job cuts

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) - Shares in UBS soared on Monday after media reports the Swiss bank would announce up to 10,000 job cuts as it takes the knife to its investment banking operations, particularly its fixed income business.

UBS Chief Executive Sergio Ermotti is expected to announce the radical restructuring along with third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, but news of the plans started leaking late on Friday.

"The changes being discussed in the media, if true, would represent a transformational change for UBS," said analysts at Espirito Santo Investment Bank in a note to clients.

"It is not just an additional cost-cutting exercise at the margin, but a strategy that would enable the bank to return much more capital to shareholders and/or significantly increase the capital ratios."

UBS shares were up 6.3 percent at 13.00 francs at 1304 GMT (0904 EDT), having earlier touched 13.06, their highest since March. The overall European banking index <.sx7p> was down 0.7 percent.

The expected cuts will add to the tens of thousands of jobs the financial sector has shed globally since the financial crisis of 2008. UBS's local rival Credit Suisse said last week it was also making more cost cuts.

"If UBS does take radical action, we would expect this to kick off further industry restructuring," Citi analysts said.

JP Morgan analyst Kian Abouhossein, who has long advocated radical cuts to the UBS investment bank, said Ermotti and Chairman Axel Weber, who joined UBS in May, had probably accelerated restructuring due to poor quarterly results.

"If the press reports are correct, UBS is taking the right actions to improve shareholder returns," he said. "The IB is going back to its historic core franchise under Warburg."

UBS bought SG Warburg, a British merchant bank, in 1995.

Analysts polled by Reuters before news of the restructuring emerged forecast UBS would report net profit more than halved in the quarter to 457 million francs ($489 million), though the core wealth management business is seen attracting a healthy 6.6 billion francs in net new assets.

Ermotti, a 52-year-old former co-head of equity markets at Merrill Lynch, took the top job just 13 months ago after his predecessor Oswald Gruebel stepped down over a trading scandal involving $2.3 billion of losses.

Ermotti had already announced a shift in focus towards the bank's core private banking business for wealthy clients and away from the investment banking unit, which ran up $50 billion in subprime losses, forcing a Swiss government bailout in 2008.

"PUBLIC FUNERAL"

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday that Switzerland's biggest bank was expected to make the cuts across the firm globally, but most are likely to occur in its hard-hit trading and investment banking areas.

The cuts at UBS, which employed 63,520 staff at the end of June, would come on top of 3,500 job losses announced last year.

Kepler analyst Dirk Becker said the task would be difficult, noting the investment bank employs over 16,000 people and runs a balance sheet of over 900 billion Swiss francs ($962 billion).

"This will not be done overnight," Becker said in a note. "We believe it will cost several billions of francs in exit losses, restructuring charges and realignments for this to get to the desired size."

UBS had already started informing about 400 investment bank staff they would be losing their jobs, sources said last week.

Most senior employees in advisory or trading functions have yet to hear about their fate and could be let go this week, with a big round of layoffs due on Tuesday, two sources at the bank told Reuters on Monday.

UBS bankers said they were not surprised that Carsten Kengeter, a co-head of the investment bank, looks set to head the fixed-income operations, which are expected to be split off into a separate unit to be wound down over time.

They said he had lost clout since the July arrival of Andrea Orcel, a close ally of Ermotti from Bank of America , who is expected to run the equities, fixed income, foreign exchange and advisory businesses that will remain active.

"Carsten was always going to leave sooner or later," said one senior UBS banker. "It's like a public funeral for Carsten."

"Super storm" Sandy regains hurricane strength

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical cyclone Sandy revved back up to hurricane strength on Saturday as it churned toward the U.S. northeast coast where it threatens to become one of the worst storms in decades.

The late-season storm has been dubbed "Frankenstorm" by some weather watchers because it will combine elements of a tropical cyclone and a winter storm and is forecast to reach the U.S. coast close to Halloween.

Forecast models show it will have all the ingredients to morph into a so-called "super storm."

Governors in states along the U.S. East Coast declared emergencies on Friday, with officials urging residents to stock up on food, water and batteries.

The U.S. Navy ordered all ships in the Norfolk, Virginia, area, including a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, out to sea to ride out the approaching storm.

"We're expecting a large, large storm," said Louis Uccellini, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Center for Environmental Prediction. "The circulation of this storm as it approaches the coast could cover about the eastern third of the United States."

Sandy battered the Bahamas southeast of Florida on Friday after causing widespread destruction in eastern Cuba a day earlier. The storm was expected to crawl northward on Saturday and Sunday and then turn toward the U.S. coast.

Sandy's powerful winds and rains were blamed for 41 deaths in several Caribbean countries, including 11 in Cuba. Most were killed by falling trees and building collapses.

On its current projected track, Sandy could make U.S. landfall on Monday night or Tuesday somewhere between North Carolina and southern New England, forecasters said.

The storm has the potential to cause widespread power outages and to unleash flooding and even dump snow as far inland as Ohio. It also threatens to disrupt air travel along the U.S. East Coast.

At 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT), Sandy was about 335 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, and packing top sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

It had earlier dropped just below hurricane strength but little overall change on strength was expected ahead of its anticipated U.S. landfall early next week, the Miami-based Hurricane Center said.

The storm picked up a little forward speed overnight but was still moving slowly over the Atlantic at 10 mph.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The massive storm has continued to grow in size with tropical force winds extending 450 miles from its center, government forecasters said.

Coming in the final weeks before the U.S. presidential election on November 6, the storm was presenting a challenge to the campaigns of U.S. President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Romney canceled a rally scheduled for Sunday evening in Virginia Beach, Virginia, while Obama's re-election campaign announced that Vice President Joe Biden had also canceled a Saturday trip to that city.

Ahead of the election, millions of Americans are taking advantage of early voting arrangements to cast their ballots. State officials said they had put in place contingency plans in case Sandy caused extended power outages or other problems that could disrupt voting.

In New York City, officials were considering shutting down the country's largest mass transit system because they were worried the storm's impact could cause flooding or high winds that might endanger subways and buses.

Much of Florida's northeast coast was under a tropical storm warning and storm warnings and watches extended up the coast through most of South Carolina and North Carolina.

Along North Carolina's Outer Banks, which jut out into the Atlantic, vacationers in large camper trailers and motor homes streamed off the barrier islands.

Many forecasters are warning that Sandy could be more destructive than last year's Hurricane Irene, which caused billions of dollars in damage across the U.S. Northeast.

Amazon attacks iPad mini, forgets Kindle Fire is useless in most countries

Amazon attacks iPad mini, forgets Kindle Fire is useless in most countries

While announcing their Q3 numbers yesterday, Amazon took the opportunity to take a few shots at Apple and the newly announced iPad mini. Amazon listed what they think are key advantages for their Kindle Fire HD over the iPad mini, including higher screen resolutions, better speakers, and lower cost. This, perhaps, to help distract from the loss Amazon suffered during the quarter. Here's the checklist courtesy of Amazon's press release:

Compared to the iPad mini, Kindle Fire HD 7? has: - 30% more pixels (1,024,000 vs. 786,432 pixels) - 33% more pixels per inch (216 vs. 163) - Watch HD movies and TV ? cannot on iPad mini (iPad mini is an SD device) - Better audio with dual stereo speakers and Dolby Digital Plus - Wi-Fi with dual band, dual antennas + MIMO - Costs $130 less

Amazon posted a $28 million operating loss last quarter, and they expect losses for next quarter as well. This isn?t good news. Neither is Amazon is bringing specs to an experience fight, a strategy that has proven catastrophic for every other iPad competitor in the history of iPad competitors. The Kindle Fire HD is particularly amusing here for a couple of reasons.

First, it's not a tablet. It's a media appliance, a front-end for the Amazon store with great shopping software and middling everything else. Second, because of that, it's barely more than a paperweight outside the small handful of countries in which Amazon sells it.

The iPad mini is a full tablet, available in 90+ countries, with the best tablet software in the industry, and over 250,000 tablet class apps.

So, as they say, good luck with that Amazon.

Soccer star, pop diva run in Ukraine's election

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? An extravagantly dressed pop diva, a retired football star, the son of a famous actor, an opposition leader suspiciously cozy with the government. Meet some members of the eclectic cast running in Sunday's parliamentary election in Ukraine.

Ukrainian political parties have brought in celebrities or even created fake opposition in an effort to boost their ratings and split their rivals' vote. Such tactics raise questions about Ukraine's commitment to democracy and its hopes of integrating with the West.

The two main pro-Western opposition parties hope to challenge President Viktor Yanukovych's nearly three-year grip on power. They aim to wrestle the parliamentary majority away from his Party of Regions and undo actions that have been judged undemocratic by the West, such as the imprisonment of charismatic former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The Party of Regions has tried to raise its profile by offering the No. 2 spot on its candidate list to pop diva Taisia Povaliy, which guarantees her a seat in Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. The 47-year-old blonde, who wears low-cut, floor-length gowns and sings about the pain of lost love, acknowledges that politics had never been her calling.

"I never thought that I would run for parliament, I never planned it. And then I discovered that people ? the people themselves ? want me to represent them," Povaliy said on a TV celebrity gossip program. "What difference does it make if I work on stage or in the Verkhovna Rada?"

Another party running for parliament, called Ukraine Forward and led by former Tymoshenko ally Natalia Korolevska, is widely believed to be supported by the ruling party and aimed at siphoning off opposition votes. Korolevska, a 37-year-old businesswoman turned politician, was ousted from Tymoshenko's party this spring after she refused to support a motion calling for the jailed leader's release.

She went on to found her own party, hoping to attract Tymoshenko's voters looking for an attractive and pro-Western female leader. But even though she denies any links to the government and calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Korolevska gets so much airtime on government-friendly television channels that she is viewed as a tool of Yanukovych's campaign.

To lead her party's candidate list, Korolevska brought in retired football star Andriy Shevchenko and actor Ostap Stupka, the less illustrious son of late renowned actor Bohdan Stupka. Giant billboards of her and the two celebrities went up along streets and roads.

Shevchenko, the 36-year-old striker known as Sheva, is extremely popular in Ukraine, but many wonder how he would make the transition to lawmaker.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Shevchenko said he planned to concentrate on sports and health issues in parliament and cited the poor athletic condition of many Ukrainian school students as one of the top problems in the country.

"What has Ukraine come to? Today, 70 percent of children cannot do a simple set of physical exercises," Shevchenko said.

Andreas Umland, a political scientist at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, said the use of such tricks known here as "political technologies" are corrupting the political process in this former Soviet republic.

"Obviously, the readiness to manipulate politics with all sorts of dubious strategies is high, and includes the active use of politically incompetent, but famous figures," Umland said. "Political technology is a concept unknown in the West."

And the celebrities are only happy to oblige. It seems that many of them run for parliament motivated more by the perks and parliamentary immunity enjoyed by Ukrainian lawmakers than a desire to the serve the nation ? a trend manifested by the fact that scores of legislators routinely ditch parliament sessions and allow colleagues to vote for them.

World boxing champion Vitali Klitshcko, 40, is also running for parliament, but he has years of political experience and a record of challenging Yanukovych's party in the Kiev city council "like a burr under the saddle," as he puts it. With the charismatic Tymoshenko in prison, his Udar (Punch) party has gained popularity in recent months and is running neck-and-neck with Tymoshenko's party. The two parties' failure to join forces plays into the hands of Yanukovych.

The extremely tall and muscular Klitshchko says that competing on Ukraine's political arena, with its dirty tricks and below-the-belt punches, can be harder than fighting in the boxing ring.

"We have declared a fight for Ukraine and we will win it!" he told hundreds of cheering supporters at a campaign rally in Kiev last week.

With the campaign almost over, pollsters say that the use of celebrities has largely failed to sway Ukrainian voters. Korolevska's party is now less popular than before taking on Shevchenko, prompting her to replace posters showing him and Stupka, the actor, with just her face.

"This demonstrates the stupidity of our politicians," said Iryna Bekeshkina, head of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, a polling agency. "At the end of the day our voter, of course, is still far away from being rational, but still he is not that stupid."

Obama wraps blitz with Ohio rally

CLEVELAND - After 37 hours, 6,500 flight miles and six grassroots rallies that drew tens of thousands of supporters, President Obama's frenetic battleground-state blitz came to a close tonight with a rally on a small airport tarmac overlooking Lake Erie.

"This is the final stop on our 48-hour fly-around all across America. We've been going for two days straight," a visibly tired but spirited Obama told a crowd of 12,000 after taking the stage under starry skies.

"We've been from the East Coast to the West Coast and now we're going back east again," he said. "So Ohio, I gotta tell you, even though I've been going for about 38 hours straight, even though my voice is kind of hoarse, I've still got a spring in my step because our cause is right, because we're fighting for the future."

The event was marked by the dramatic arrival of Air Force One - the smaller Boeing 757-model - on a landing strip several hundred yards from where the crowd was huddled. The plane taxied right up to the stage and bleachers, which were lit by giant floodlights for Obama's final stump speech of his self-described travel "extravaganza."

The crowd chanted "Obama! Obama!" as the president jogged down the steps of his bird and out onto the stage.

"Hello, Ohio!" he said.

Over the past two days, Obama has crisscrossed the country, visiting Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia, Illinois and Ohio. He addressed 68,000 voters combined at rallies across the country and spoke to tens of thousands more by phone in conference calls from Air Force One.

He arrived here at Burke Lakefront Airport just hours after casting his own ballot in Chicago - the first time a sitting president has voted early in person for a general election campaign.

"I've come to Ohio today to ask you for your vote," he said. "And I'm asking you to vote early. Here in Ohio you can vote now. You don't have to vote later. I need you to vote now and I need your help to keep moving America forward."

Ohio is viewed by Obama strategists and the Republican nominee Mitt Romney's campaign as the decisive state in the 2012 election. President Obama has visited Ohio 18 times visit this year - making it his most-visited state of the election campaign, underscoring its importance.

"Ohio, I believe in you. And I need you to keep believing in me," Obama said. "And if you're willing to roll up your sleeves ? we're going to win this election and finish this election."

The Paleolithic Diet: So easy a caveman once did it

With the amount of sugary, processed foods loaded with chemical additives that an American consumes on a daily basis, the US has been dubbed one of the most obese countries in the world. Our bodies were not meant to consume the genetically engineered produce that is found in the supermarkets, or the high amount of sugar replacements that are lurking in diet foods- which is why many professionals in the fitness industry have embraced The
Paleolithic Diet.

The primary idea of the diet is to revert back to the eating habits from the Paleolithic Period-when pasta, sugary foods, and processed goods were not staple foods. Therefore, the objective of the diet is to eat only what our ancestors, the cavemen, did. This means lots of meat, fish, poultry, vegetables,
fruits, and nuts. Because of its high protein and fiber content, this is not a diet plagued by hunger pangs. The Paleolithic diet claims to improve overall health and fitness, thus making one less susceptible to diseases.

The diet claims make the benefits sound fantastic, but many health experts would disagree that there are truth to its claims. ?We are not under the same
conditions that our ancestors had to face and it is not realistic to eat like they did,? Nutritionist Tammy Darke said. ?Cavemen had to hunt buying the meats and nuts and seeds from a grocery store.? Also, we didn?t see common diseases in cavemen that we see today partly because we live longer, allowing cardiovascular disease and cancer to develop in our aging bodies.? This is not to say that the idea of the Paleolithic Diet is not admirable, or even ineffective to use as an inspiration to healthy eating. ?I do think that done correctly, which would take considerable time and planning, this diet can be somewhat healthy by encouraging less processed foods and more natural foods that are prepared at home,? Darke said. ?It also encourages more fruits and vegetables with less added sodium and sugar.?

While the Paleolithic Diet is not exactly a weight loss diet, some do lose weight on it initially. This is because while losing out on many grain products, the high calorie butter spreads are lost as well. Exercise on the diet is recommended, for there should not be a shortage of energy and the health risks are miniscule, which is not to say they don not exist.

Health experts caution on the diet?s high fat content and point out that by excluding dairy and grains from the many nutrients are left out as well, such as calcium, Vitamin D and B, folate, omega-3s and potentially carbohydrates if enough fruits are not consumed. Another drawback to this diet is the boomerang effect you get from restricting yourself from certain foods. Once you have a cheat day or decide to eat the things you stopped eating when on the diet again you crave those particular items. This is somewhat impeding on the idea of long-term weight loss.

The Paleolithic Diet is, however, promoted by many exercise programs and is noted to be more nutritionally beneficial than the Mediterranean Diet, but not as effective as other healthy diets, such as the Volumetric Diet.

What we know and don't know about fungal meningitis outbreak

In a new perspective piece being published Online First tonight in Annals of Internal Medicine, a physician recalls lessons learned from treating patients affected by the 2002 outbreak of Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis meningitis or arthritis related to contaminated, injectable coticosteroids prepared from a compounding pharmacy. According to the author, the lessons he learned in 2002 are applicable to the current outbreak. He warns that compounding of preservative-free corticosteroids requires meticulous sterility to ensure lack of fungal contamination. Without this sterility, fungus grows aggressively. As seen with the current cases, once injected, the fungus can travel through the body's tissues rapidly, leading to invasive mycosis. However, the incubation period from exposure to disease could be up to six months, so exposed patients will need to be followed for a long time. While there were many people exposed to the fungus in 2002, all but one fatal case were successfully treated with voriconazole. Treatment decisions should be made on a case-by-case basis, but the author writes that evidence from the previous outbreak suggests voriconazole as the logical antifungal drug for initial treatment. Due to the aggressive and deadly nature of the disease, it is important for physicians to act decisively and early. The author warns that these outbreaks will happen again if pharmacy societies, the FDA, and the pharmaceutical industry do not work together to regulate pharmacy compounding.

(AP) ? A Florida man was charged Wednesday with smuggling dinosaur fossils into the United States, including a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus Bataar skeleton from Mongolia, federal prosecutors said.

Eric Prokopi, a self-described "commercial paleontologist" who buys and sells whole and partial dinosaur skeletons, was arrested at his home in Gainesville, according to a complaint unsealed by prosecutors. He was charged with smuggling goods into the U.S. and interstate sale and receipt of stolen goods.

He also faces one count of conspiracy to smuggle illegal goods, possess stolen property and make false statements. If convicted on all of the charges, he could face up to 35 years in prison.

Prokopi made an appearance Wednesday in federal court in Gainesville, where U.S. District Judge Gary R. Jones ordered him to be held on $100,000 bond. Prokopi must also surrender his passport and be kept under home detention. He did not enter a plea.

The arrest was handled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the investigation "uncovered a one-man black market in prehistoric fossils." The U.S. government seized the Tyrannosaurus skeleton earlier this year after it was sold by an auction house for $1.05 million.

Prokopi did not immediately respond to a phone call, but his attorney has said he did nothing wrong.

Prokopi has been involved in a lawsuit in New York over the auction because the Mongolian government has said it may belong to that country. Prokopi's attorney in the lawsuit, Michael McCullough, has said his client is entitled to keep the creature he spent a year putting together at great expense.

McCullough has said the U.S. government was incorrect when it alleged that the skeleton pieces were brought into the country in one $15,000 shipment. He said there were three other shipments and only 37 percent of the completed skeleton came from one specimen.

Federal prosecutors said Prokopi misrepresented the identity, origin and value of the skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus bataar, a dinosaur that lived approximately 70 million years ago.

Prokopi also is accused of illegally importing from Mongolia the skeleton of a Saurolophus, another dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period that he sold to a gallery in California along with fossils of two other dinosaurs native to Mongolia, Gallimimus and Oviraptor mongoliensis. He also imported the fossilized remains of a Microraptor, a small, flying dinosaur from China, the complaint said.

Prokopi brought the fossils into the country between 2010 and 2012, prosecutors said.

Colorado Springs Business Journal ? Blog Archive ? Retail sales ...

Share this story:

Propelled by solid sales in clothing and electronics, retails sales in September provided a promising preview to the holiday shopping season, according to the National Retail Federation.

September retail sales increased .4 percent from August and 2.1 percent from last year?s September sales.

?In spite of the uncertainty and unease surrounding our nation?s high unemployment and long-term fiscal challenges, consumers continue to spend and shop,? said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. ?Robust back-to-school spending, combined with a series of new, technology-led product launches, certainly helped retailers in September. The American consumer is holding their own in this economic environment, but the question remains: for how long??

Total retail and food services sales, including automobiles, gas stations and restaurants, increased 1.1 percent month-to-month and 5.4 percent unadjusted from last year.

Other findings from the report:

- Clothing and clothing accessories increased .6 percent from August and 3.6 percent from 2011.

- Electronics and appliance store sales increased 4.5 percent from August and 2.5 percent from last September.

- Furniture and home furnishing stores? sales increased. 4 percent from August and 5.1 percent from last September.

Replicating risk genes in bipolar disorder

Monday, October 15, 2012

One of the biggest challenges in psychiatric genetics has been to replicate findings across large studies.

Scientists at King's College London, Institute of Psychiatry have now performed one of the largest ever genetic replication studies of bipolar affective disorder, with 28,000 subjects recruited from 36 different research centers. Their findings provide compelling evidence that the chromosome 3p21.1 locus contains a common genetic risk for bipolar disorder, the PBRM1 gene.

The locus at 3p21.1 has also been previously associated with depression and schizophrenia. Using a separate dataset of over 34,000 subjects, they did not confirm association of this same variant with schizophrenia.

Thus, they replicated the association of the marker with bipolar disorder, but not with schizophrenia. This is an interesting finding, in that it distinguishes the heritable risk for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It contrasts with the majority of studies that have found that schizophrenia risk genes also contribute to the risk for bipolar disorder.

"This study adds to the recent rapid progress in identifying genes for mental illness. The last few years have seen the identification of about two dozen genetic loci for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia," commented first author Evangelos Vassos. "About half of these are shared between these two disorders, indicating they share some, but not all, genetic causes."

Due to the conflicting results, it is clear that more work is needed to determine the role this locus plays in psychosis, but the evidence seems solid that it is associated with bipolar disorder.

PBRM1, the gene implicated in this study, codes for a protein that is involved in chromatin remodeling or "epigenetics", meaning that it influences the ability of a variety of environmental exposures to influence the expression of a range of genes. It has also been previously implicated in the risk for a form of renal cancer.

"There is growing interest in epigenetic mechanisms that might contribute to the development of bipolar disorder. The implication of a gene involved in chromatin remodeling in bipolar disorder risk adds fuel to this fire," commented Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry.

Vassos concluded that "future studies may be able to use this information to develop new treatments for these disorders."

Greg Justice Announces Release Date for New Book Titled "Mind ...

?

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 14, 2012 -
Greg Justice of AYC Health & Fitness, announced November 1, 2012, as the release date for his latest book titled "Mind Your Own Fitness - A Mindful Approach to Exercise". ?

Brian Grasso, of FTR Nation, says:

Periodically, a book is written that carries the very literal possibility of causing revolution.

The untapped notion, no matter how new, innovative or based on ancient wisdom, whose time is now.

The underappreciated concept that challenges a status quo and demands attention.

This is that book; and encased within it, the idea.

For 16 years in the Fitness Industry, I walked the fine line of believing the physical paradigms that professionals felt compelled to learn, at a never ending rate, were potentially less important than understanding the complexity of the human brain and the role it could play regarding optimal health, wellness and performance.

Greg Justice has rightfully and ingenuously transformed the proverbial ?3rd Wheel? into the ?3rd Apex?.

?Physical Exercise? is essential.

?Nutritional Support?, vital.

But ?Mental Cohesion?, finally, has become noted as equally indispensable.

As obesity rates soar alarmingly worldwide, structural and movement dysfunctions continue to cause aggregate inactivity and dietary malfeasance condemns the world to a virtual confusion of ?right? versus ?wrong?, Fitness Professionals and enthusiast alike are left to search for newer inroads to help better understand this tragic and historic pandemic.

As the adage says, ?Where the head goes, the body follows?. ?

Think about that very seriously and understand the true power of what you are about to read."

Here's what other trainers are saying about Greg Justice:

"Training veteran Greg Justice didn't just get in on the leading edge of an emerging industry, he helped create it."
?-Shelby Murphy, Editor PFP magazine

"Quite simply, Greg is one of the most experienced trainers in the world having clocked up tens of thousands of client contact hours over more than 30 years in-the-trenches as a fitness professional and, during this time has managed to maintain an open mind and an open heart to new ideas, concepts and practices as they brush up against this adolescent industry of ours.

Better yet, he's managed to remain a thoughtful, humble and generous individual who's still passionately in love with what he does and those he does it for which, in an industry of increasing cynicism sets him apart from fully 99% of trainers who often fall more in love with the marketing practices associated with being a trainer than with being a trainer itself."
?-Dax Moy, The UK's Leading Personal Training Coach & Author of "The MAGIC
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Hundred Goal Achievement Program"

"Greg Justice has logged more training hours than probably any trainer on the planet and is one of the nicest and best-hearted dudes in the industry."
?-Chris McCombs, KickBackLife.com

"Greg Justice is one of the most respected and experienced trainers in the industry, having trained over 46,000 sessions, generated millions in training sales, written for virtually every trade publication and built multiple successful businesses."
?-Ultimate Business Systems

Greg is one of the originators and leaders in the entire training industry."
?-Kaiser Serajuddin, Super-Trainer.com

"Greg is an icon in the personal training industry."
?-Erik Rokeach, FitnessBusinessInterviews.com

Jump from space's edge provides collective moment

The capsule and attached helium balloon carrying Felix Baumgartner lifts off as he attempts to break the speed of sound with his own body by jumping from a space capsule lifted by a helium balloon, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, in Roswell, N.M. Baumgartner plans to jump from an altitude of 120,000 feet, an altitude chosen to enable him to achieve Mach 1 in free fall, which would deliver scientific data to the aerospace community about human survival from high altitudes.(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

(AP) ? Felix Baumgartner stood alone at the edge of space, poised in the open doorway of a capsule suspended above Earth and wondering if he would make it back alive. Twenty four miles below him, millions of people were right there with him, watching on the Internet and marveling at the wonder of the moment.

A second later, he stepped off the capsule and barreled toward the New Mexico desert as a tiny white speck against a darkly-tinted sky. Millions watched him breathlessly as he shattered the sound barrier and then landed safely about nine minutes later, becoming the world's first supersonic skydiver.

"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," Baumgartner said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive."

The tightly-orchestrated jump meant primarily to entertain became much more than that in the dizzying, breathtaking moment ? a collectively shared cross between Neil Armstrong's moon landing and Evel Knievel's famed motorcycle jumps on ABC's "Wide World of Sports."

It was part scientific wonder, part daredevil reality show, with the live-streamed event instantly capturing the world's attention on a sleepy Sunday at the same time seven NFL football games were being played. It proved, once again, the power of the Internet in a world where news travels as fast as Twitter.

The event happened without a network broadcast in the United States, though organizers said more than 40 television stations in 50 countries ? including cable's Discovery Channel in the U.S. ? carried the live feed. Instead, millions flocked online, drawing more than 8 million simultaneous views to a YouTube live stream at its peak, YouTube officials said.

More than 130 digital outlets carried the live feed, organizers said.

It was a last hurrah for what some have billed as a dying Space Age, as NASA's shuttle program ends and the ways humans explore space is dramatically changing. As the jump unfolded, the space shuttle Endeavor crept toward a Los Angeles museum, where it will become nothing more than an exhibit.

Baumgartner, a 43-year-old Austrian, hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, according to preliminary data, and became the first person to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft. The capsule he jumped from had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above Earth, carried by a 55-story ultra-thin helium balloon.

Landing on his feet in the desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of jubilant friends and spectators who closely followed at a command center. Among them was his mother, Eva Baumgartner, who was overcome with emotion, crying.

"Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," an exuberant Baumgartner told reporters outside mission control after the jump.

About half of Baumgartner's nine-minute descent was a free fall of 119,846 feet, according to Brian Utley, a jump observer from the FAI, an international group that works to determine and maintain the integrity of aviation records.

During the first part of Baumgartner's free fall, anxious onlookers at the command center held their breath as he appeared to spin uncontrollably.

"When I was spinning first 10, 20 seconds, I never thought I was going to lose my life but I was disappointed because I'm going to lose my record. I put seven years of my life into this," he said.

He added: "In that situation, when you spin around, it's like hell and you don't know if you can get out of that spin or not. Of course, it was terrifying. I was fighting all the way down because I knew that there must be a moment where I can handle it."

Baumgartner said traveling faster than sound is "hard to describe because you don't feel it." The pressurized suit prevented him from feeling the rushing air or even the loud noise he made when breaking the sound barrier.

With no reference points, "you don't know how fast you travel," he said.

Coincidentally, Baumgartner's accomplishment came on the 65th anniversary of the day that U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first man to officially break the sound barrier in a jet. Yeager, in fact, commemorated that feat on Sunday, flying in the back seat of an F-15 Eagle as it broke the sound barrier at more than 30,000 feet above California's Mojave Desert.

At Baumgartner's insistence, some 30 cameras recorded his stunt. Shortly after launch early Sunday, screens at mission control showed the capsule, dangling from the massive balloon, as it rose gracefully above the New Mexico desert. Baumgartner could be seen on video, calmly checking instruments inside the capsule.

The dive was more than just a stunt. NASA is eager to improve its blueprints for future spacesuits.

Baumgartner's team included Joe Kittinger, who first tried to break the sound barrier from 19.5 miles up in 1960, reaching speeds of 614 mph. With Kittinger inside mission control, the two men could be heard going over technical details during the ascension.

"Our guardian angel will take care of you," Kittinger radioed to Baumgartner around the 100,000-foot mark.

After Baumgartner landed, his sponsor, Red Bull, posted a picture to Facebook of him kneeling on the ground. It generated nearly 216,000 likes, 10,000 comments and more than 29,000 shares in less than 40 minutes.

On Twitter, half the worldwide trending topics had something to do with the jump, pushing past seven NFL football games. Among them was this tweet from NASA: "Congratulations to Felix Baumgartner and RedBull Stratos on record-breaking leap from the edge of space!"

This attempt marked the end of a long road for Baumgartner, a record-setting high-altitude jumper. He already made two preparation jumps in the area, one from 15 miles high and another from 18 miles high. He has said that this was his final jump.

Red Bull has never said how much the long-running, complex project cost.

Although he broke the sound barrier, the highest manned-balloon flight record and became the man to jump from the highest altitude, he failed to break Kittinger's 5 minute and 35 second longest free fall record. Baumgartner's was timed at 4 minutes and 20 seconds in free fall.

He said he opened his parachute at 5,000 feet because that was the plan.

"I was putting everything out there, and hope for the best and if we left one record for Joe ? hey it's fine," he said when asked if he intentionally left the record for Kittinger to hold. "We needed Joe Kittinger to help us break his own record, and that tells the story of how difficult it was and how smart they were in the 60's. He is 84 years old, and he is still so bright and intelligent and enthusiastic".

Baumgartner has said he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

Before that, though, he said, "I'll go back to LA to chill out for a few days."
