IRA vs 401K Investing Help

Can There be a Clear Winner Between the IRA and 401K War?

There are a lot of people out there who do not know what to do with their money following the recent economic troubles. People lost a great deal of money when the economy went bottoms up and in turn this has now made them affraid to commit to investing. To ensure that you make no mistakes on your choice of investment for your retirement I am going to do a comparison between the main choices that you have. Here is my 401K vs IRA vs Physical Gold comparrison.

We are first going to have a look into the 401k and the benefits of investing with it.

Basically a 401K is your standard retirement plan which you will be given a choice through your work of investing some of your wages in each month. Up until the day that you choose to start withdrawing your funds in a 401k you wont pay a single cent of income tax on it which is one of its main advantages. When you try to get your money released earlier than your assigned retirement age then you will often be punished for it and made to pay a lot of money in various taxes.

I feel that when people put their savings into a 401K then they can feel extremelly out of control in regards to their money. This is because you cannot just withdraw your money at will and if you do you can often face heavy penatlies. In this day and age there are an increasing number of people who are getting to their retirement age who thought their money was safer than it is turning out to be in their 401K's. When 2008 came the economy took its worst hit it has seen in a very long time and this instantly woke a lot of people up to the reality that their money is not as safe as they first thought. If you are looking into a long term investment I would say that 401K's are not a great choice as they hold too much long term risk.

401k vs IRA: Time for the IRA!

IRA funds usually can be placed into 2 different common types that people can open for retirement. There are so many options available out there that this first type of IRA that we are going to look at in my opinion is easily passed by and it is called the traditional IRA, it does carry some advantages but definitly more disadvantages. The traditional IRA is distributed to its investors 100% on an age basis and I feel that this is its biggest down fall. Basically the rule here states that after you reach 70 you have got to start withdrawing your money weather you like it or not so come 70 and a half you have to make that first withdrawl. One of the main down falls of this type of IRA is that you can really run into some troubles with the IRS if you fail to withdraw your savings in time. This fact makes it a bad option for a retirement investor.

When we look further into the Roth IRA we can quickly see that it also carries problems of its own, such as it is not tax-deductible. One of the other points that I have discovered regarding the Roth IRA is that you have to pay your full tax amount in one lump for each year because it does not reduce your adjusted gross income. Right now the Roth IRA is probably the best option that is around for a retirement plan today. The only other thing I would suggest is looking into one that allows you to add physical Gold.

Primary Drama Lesson Plan | Drama New Zealand

Reading the story

Move to the mat to hear a story about a grandmother:? ?The Granny who wasn?t like other grannies? by Denis Bond.? As chn settle you might like to discuss how they used drama techniques ? facial expression or posture, gesture to show their role.? You may also like to look for examples from the work that highlight/discuss how DIFFERENT everyone?s grandparents are.

?

Read the story up to the bus conversation. Discuss the problem with Tim?s Gran and explain that we are going to bring to life some of these moments so we can really understand what is happening for Tim.? Discuss/clarify what drama techniques we use when we are creating a frozen moment.

?

Re-creating the story

In small groups create these frozen moments: -

?

  • Gran arrives on a noisy motorbike while Tim?s friends look on and laugh.

?

  • Gran cheers loudly at the football match and joins in scoring the winning goal.

?

  • Gran drives very fast on the fairground bumper cars and scares people

?

  • Gran goes on the rollercoaster while other grannies watch, unimpressed.

?

  • Gran climbs on the adventure playground, higher than the children

?

  • Gran jumps in the puddles getting Tim and another child all wet and tells the child, ?Don?t be such a cry-baby!?

?

Present and use spoken thought, overheard conversations and playing the action to explore the situation and the characters.

?

Reflecting on our understandings

Move chn back to the mat and create a Role on the Wall ? Tim?s Gran.? Together generate words to describe Tim?s Gran. Set aside. (Leave room for additions later in the lesson.)

?

The Pre-text The teacher explains that a letter has arrived for the chn.? She opens it and discovers that it?s from Tim.? Since Tim?s heard the chn are experts on grandparent behaviour, he wants them to help his Gran, who he is sending along in a few minutes.? Generate ideas for questions.

?

Teacher in role as Tim?s Gran

Go into role using a prop or costume item for Tim?s gran. Chn meet Tim?s Gran. In role, share your concern about Tim and ask chn to help you to learn how to be a ?proper? grandmother.? Do they know how she should be behaving?? Who could she go and speak to to learn about these matters?? Where did their grandparents learn?? Take chn?s suggestions but maintain a confused, uncertain demeanour.? Thank the children and ask if the children would take a bit more time to think about this so she can be a better grandparent to Tim.

?

Circular drama and teacher in role

The Perfect Grandparent.? Brainstorm ideas of what grandparents are like and how they should behave.

The teacher (out of role) explains that there are other people who might know about how to be a good granny.? Together with the chn identify people to consult on grandmother behaviour ? Therapist, other grans, chn, and teachers.? Come up with several options.? From these, form several small groups (4-5 chn) and assign each group one of these roles.?

?

Developing Role: Discuss the kind of advice would this group give to Tim?s Gran.? Arrange the space to suit these roles and prepare to meet & advise Tim?s Gran.? How would these characters behave when they meet Tim?s Gran?

?

Teacher-in-role visits each group and gets advice on how grannies should behave.? She thanks everybody and teacher comes out of role and moves chn to the mat to hear how the story progresses.

?

Read the rest of the story.

?

Discussion:

Ask the chn to explain the ending and clarify this change in Tim?s understanding.? Through the discussion and with reference to the story, highlight the idea that being different makes life interesting, that we don?t have to be the same to be okay.

?

Come up with some other (positive) adjectives, describe her feelings, thoughts ? as much information as we need to provide to have our work capture this new perspective Tim has of his gran? add these on the Role on the Wall.

?

In pairs, create a sculpture of Tim?s Gran to go in our Grandparents gallery.? One sculpt, one be clay.? As the teacher activates your pair, have the Sculptor create an adjective statement using the words from the role on the wall or adding your own.? ?Tim?s Gran was?.?

?

Reflection:

Who loves you ?just the way you are?? Discuss differences in our grandparents, in people.? Discuss the idea of ?equal but different?.?

?

Discuss what we learned about using drama techniques to show roles and to tell our story today.

?

You may like to move the discussion into the ways we are ?equal but different? to others including people who are disabled, have a different colour skin, a different way of talking etc.

?

If chn have prior experience, they can craft a frozen moment.? If not, you may like to ask them to play the moment and then freeze. Ask roles to speak aloud the thoughts of their character and/or allow the audience to overhear conversations from the characters who are watching Tim?s gran.? Vary the use of conventions as you wish, depending on the scene and confidence of group members. Give rehearsal time and rove to assist.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?What kind of things might we need to ask Tim?s gran in order to help her??

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?What kind of advice would this group give to Tim?s gran? Come up ideas for Tim?s Gran in order to become a better grandparent.? How would these characters behave when they meet Tim?s Gran??

?

?

?

?

?

?

?Tim changes his mind!? What were the positive things about his Gran?s behaviour?? What did Tim?s friends really think???

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?I love you just the way you are? ? What does that mean??

Who loves you ?just the way you are?? Think about the differences in our grandparents.? They are not perfect, and we are not perfect, but we love each other ?just the way we are?.?

Exclusive: Eyeing Yahoo deal, Alibaba may take HK unit private (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba plans to take its Hong Kong-listed unit private, two sources familiar with the matter said, as part of a complex deal that would strengthen founder Jack Ma's control and give key stakeholder Yahoo cash and a direct stake in one of Alibaba's operating businesses.

Alibaba Group, the online business-to-business group set up in 1999 by former tour guide and now billionaire Ma, plans to buy back most of the 40 percent stake in it that Yahoo purchased for about $1 billion in 2005.

Under the plans being discussed, Alibaba Group would use bank loans and cash plus an asset swap to buy back about a 25 percent stake, leaving Yahoo holding 15 percent, the sources said. The U.S. group's 40 percent holding is worth an estimated $13 billion to $14 billion, based on recent deal valuations.

Alibaba Group, one of the three leading players in the world's largest Internet market, plans to pay a third of the consideration through a stake in one of its operating assets -- making a deal tax-free for Yahoo -- and the rest, around $6 billion, in cash, the sources said. It is looking to raise a loan of about $3 billion to help fund the deal.

The sources said taking Alibaba.com private was just one of the proposals under discussion and was not a pre-condition of any Yahoo deal. Any final agreement could be several weeks away, they added.

Alibaba Group's plans are part of an overall deal being discussed by Yahoo, an Internet pioneer under pressure from investors to turn around a lackluster performance. Last month, Yahoo appointed Scott Thompson as CEO to replace Carol Bartz, who was fired in September, and co-founder Jerry Yang quit the company.

Yahoo shareholders are frustrated at stakeholders' apparent indecision over how to handle investments in Alibaba and other Asian assets.

"Alibaba.com's share price has been quite bumpy since its listing," said Wendy Huang, head of regional Internet and media research at RBS in Hong Kong. "Probably taking it private will make it more flexible for the group to do the transformation that it's going through."

Trading in Alibaba.com shares was halted on Thursday pending an announcement regarding its parent. Alibaba.com, which is about 73 percent-owned by Alibaba Group, has a market value of nearly $6 billion, making the remaining stake in it worth around $1.6 billion.

Alibaba.com is the most likely operating unit in which Yahoo may be offered a stake, one of the sources said. Both parties have an understanding on this arrangement, but have not signed any formal deal yet, the source added.

Other Alibaba Group assets that could be used in a swap deal with Yahoo could include Taobao.com, often dubbed "China's e-Bay", Taomall, Yahoo (China) and Alipay, an e-payment business, sources said, adding Yahoo would get to choose which assets it wants.

The sources requested anonymity because the discussions were private. An Alibaba Group spokesman declined to comment. A representative for Yahoo declined to comment.

Sources previously told Reuters that under a "cash rich split" plan being discussed, Yahoo would effectively transfer most of its 40 percent Alibaba stake back to the Chinese company, and all of its more than one-third stake in Yahoo Japan to Softbank Corp in return for cash and assets.

The idea behind the deal is twofold for Yahoo, sources previously said. Most of the company's value is locked up in its Alibaba and Yahoo Japan stakes, so selling them down would simplify its ownership structure. That in turn would make it easier for potential buyers to value Yahoo's U.S. operations and provide for a cleaner transaction should one come to fruition.

Secondly, Yahoo can use the more than $6 billion in cash it will generate from the two deals to return money to shareholders in the form of a dividend or share buyback. Yahoo's shareholders have been clamoring for some kind of liquidity event since the company turned down Microsoft's $44 billion takeover offer four years ago this month.

Yahoo shares were up 1.8 percent at $16.29 in midday Nasdaq trading.

Shares in Softbank jumped more than 4 percent to a 5-week high of 2,319 yen on Friday. Softbank has an indirect stake of 31 percent to 32 percent in Alibaba.com as it holds close to a third of Alibaba Group and owns 58 percent of Alibaba Japan.

Yahoo had also entertained separate proposals from private equity firms TPG and Silver Lake about minority investments in the company, but those offers fell short of Yahoo's expectations.

Gender-bending model pushes limits of the runway (omg!)

In this Jan. 27, 2012 photo, photographer transgender model Andrej Pejic has make-up applied by Cecelia Romero for a fashion shoot in New York. Transgender models have promoted the work of Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier, but it?s a man with no plans for gender reassignment surgery who?s straddling the line like no other. Pejic, 20, says he?s perfectly happy being gender neutral. Some in the fashion industry see Pejic as a sign of a new gender fluidity. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

NEW YORK (AP) ? On a chilly winter afternoon, Andrej Pejic settles into a Manhattan cafe with a cup of Earl Grey tea, sitting gracefully, long legs crossed. The blue-eyed fashion model gazes out a window, unaware that almost every man sitting at surrounding tables is transfixed.

A man in a black leather jacket walks up to the window, presses his face against the glass and kisses it. Pejic giggles and admits: "I find it flattering."

The admirers are likely unaware that the beautiful blonde is actually a man.

As Fashion Week gets under way in New York City, Pejic is one of the most recognizable ? and controversial ? faces in the industry. He's the only top-tier fashion model who can walk down the runway as either a man or a woman. And his androgynous beauty has turned him into a trendsetter in an industry that's always seeking to push the envelope.

"He's just this beautiful thing that everyone wants a piece of," says stylist Ken Anderson, who dressed Pejic for a German magazine cover.

He has the kind of face that makes even the vainest woman jealous: high cheekbones, flawless skin and plump, shapely lips. When he speaks, his ever-so-slight Adam's apple is the first sign of his masculinity.

Though Pejic isn't trying to be a woman, many in the transgender community have already claimed him as their own. He is seen as a bit of a maverick, someone who has embraced his sexuality without any need for explanation or justification. Last year, the gay and lesbian magazine Out named him "stylemaker of the year" and put him on its cover wearing a bridal veil and flowers in his hair.

Pejic graced the covers of 14 magazines last year alone, including an ad campaign for a Dutch push-up bra. In 2011, he was the face for a fashion line by designer Marc Jacobs. He has walked the runways for heavyweight designers, including John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier.

French designer Gaultier was so enamored with Pejic that he used his gender-bending look as a source of inspiration for his 2011 men's and women's wear shows, both of which Pejic modeled in. In the Gaultier men's show, a pistol-packing, bare-chested Pejic wore a sleek black suit as "James Blonde."

That was a stark contrast to the women's show, where Gaultier crowned Pejic with the prized piece in the women's wear collection: a couture bride's dress.

French photographer Sebastien Micke, who has photographed transgender models, says Pejic's femininity is effortless.

"Andrej's got this thing that supermodels have: how to pose in front of the camera," Micke says. "It's just natural."

But life hasn't always been so easy or glamorous for the 20-year-old. Born in Bosnia, Pejic spent much of his childhood living in a Serbian refugee camp before his family fled the country for Australia. He was discovered by a talent scout while working at a McDonald's as a teenager.

From an early age, Pejic exhibited qualities thought of as traditionally feminine, for instance, preferring Barbie dolls over toy cars. As a teenager, he often hung out with girls and was once busted for stealing makeup from a drugstore. Pejic says acceptance from his friends and family made him comfortable in his own skin.

"I'm lucky in that sense," he says. "If I had big muscles and were hairy with a beard, I might not be comfortable with that."

At 6-feet-1, he's rail-thin, a women's size 2 or 4. His shoe size is the most problematic. Technically a women's size 11, he's forced to squeeze his feet into a size 10 to walk in women's shows.

Gene Hogan, a representative at DNA models, the agency representing Pejic in the U.S., says dozens of calls pour in every week touting a slew of hot new androgynous models: "They say, 'Oh, you've got to see this guy! He's the black Andrej Pejic!'"

For Pejic, every fashion season brings a new surge of headlines and opportunities, including talks of a fragrance line or a possible reality TV show. With New York Fashion Week ? when designers debut their fall collections ? beginning Thursday, it's unclear which shows he will walk in ? if any at all.

With the frenzy of media attention over the past year, industry insiders say Pejic runs the risk of being overexposed. Given his very niche look, Pejic's ability to stay relevant may become difficult. And as his star rises, it's possible designers could hesitate to book him, fearing his persona may overshadow the clothes.

Pejic is all too aware of the fickle nature of the fashion business. He plans to attend college eventually, having deferred his acceptance to a university in Australia. If fashion doesn't work out, he'd like to go back to school and major in economics or law.

Although open to discussing almost anything, Pejic remains secretive about his sexual orientation. When asked whether he prefers men or women, he coyly smiles.

"Love has no boundaries," he says.

In this Jan. 27, 2012 photo, photographer Sebastien Micke and assistant Russ Heller, left, photographs transgender model Andrej Pejic on a rooftop in New York. Transgender models have promoted the work of Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier, but it?s a man with no plans for gender reassignment surgery who?s straddling the line like no other. Pejic, 20, says he?s perfectly happy being gender neutral. Some in the fashion industry see Pejic as a sign of a new gender fluidity.(AP Photo/Richard Drew)

A spouse's traits can become more grating than the quirks of others

In Brief

  1. The trait that initially attracts you to a person often later becomes your partner?s most irksome feature.
  2. Repeated exposure, disillusionment and the inescapability of a long-term partnership tend to make a spouse?s traits more grating than the quirks of others.
  3. Learning to reclassify annoying behaviors, increasing awareness of one?s own flaws and sharing new experiences can help turn those peccadilloes back into perks.

Syria's Splintered Opposition: Who Is Running the War Against the Regime? (Time.com)

Syria is no longer sliding into war or staring at the abyss of warfare. Syria is at war. Although peaceful protesters still take to the streets in their thousands, the phenomenon that is the Free Syrian Army (FSA) is, short of a palace coup, becoming the main actor in a revolution that is growing nastier by the day. A source in the besieged city of Homs told TIME on Monday that government forces continued to bombard residential areas in some of the heaviest barrages in the 10 months since the protests began, with perhaps 25 civilians dead in two hours of shelling and sniper fire in just one district.

On one side of this clearly asymmetrical conflict is President Bashar al-Assad and his army of more than 200,000 men, its officer corp largely intact, a loyalty forged by shared interests and fears -- and blood spilled as a result. Opposing them is the Free Syrian Army (FSA), a loose franchise of lightly-armed military defectors (and in some areas civilians) waging a growing number of localized guerrilla campaigns in their hometowns and cities, with minimal centralized control from the FSA's nominal leadership which is based across the border in Turkey. (PHOTOS: Free Syrian Army Joins Anti-Assad Protests)

It's unclear how big this rebel force is. Colonel Riad al-As'aad, the head of the FSA, has boasted of as many as 40,000 men, a claim impossible to verify and likely part of a psychological campaign to encourage further defections. General Mustafa al-Sheikh, the highest-ranking breakaway to date, has gone further, telling a British newspaper that President Assad's army is just weeks away from collapsing. Few would concur.

Perhaps because General Sheikh and Colonel As'aad are rivals. On Sunday, the general announced the formation of the High Syrian Council for the Liberation of Syria, a move that is likely to cement a split within the armed opposition, given that the FSA's deputy commander, Colonel Malik Kurdi, told TIME that Sheikh's move was nothing short of "a knife in the back of the revolution."

"We were surprised by this," Kurdi said by phone from Turkey. "General Sheikh defected and did not join us. He announced this council, it's his business. We have nothing to do with it, we don't know anything about it or its aims, but we question its formation at this point. We think it's an attempt to split the armed opposition."

It is debatable whether the FSA's leadership in Turkey serves anything more than a PR function -- a source for media and western diplomats -- without real command of FSA fighters on the ground. Now a separate and rival authority under General Sheikh is only likely to confuse things in an already disunited opposition front even as Presdient Assad escalates his attacks and takes an ever-higher daily death toll.

Basma Kodmani, spokesperson of the Syrian National Council, the de facto political opposition group, said the SNC was also wary of Sheikh's announcement. "It's not something that we fully know what were the issues behind it," Kodmani told TIME. "We realize there are some tensions related to the timing of the event. We are working to ensure that the military command will remain united." (PHOTOS: Bomb Blast In Damascus)

While the leadership of the Syrian opposition bickers and plays politics, FSA troops on the ground are outnumbered and outgunned, although they are putting up a fight and making gains in some areas. In Zabadani, a picturesque mountain resort town not far from the Lebanese border, the rebels recently forced loyalists out. A videotaped statement released in late January by the town's elders said that the town had negotiated a cease-fire with representatives of the regime, the first such tactical victory in many months of failed attempts across the country. (Zabadani's mountainous terrain may have been just as crucial as its fighting men, given that the town is perched high above the main road leading into it, making it harder to storm).

Other towns like Rastan (which is near Homs and surrounded by flat farmland), and Jabal al-Zawiya in the north have become rebel military strongholds and the scenes of intense clashes with loyalists. The rebels have at times gained and held territory -- but only briefly before loyalists forcefully pushed back. Even Zabadani is now once again reportedly being shelled.

Still, the regime defectors have some advantages. The military breakaways tend to return to their hometowns, enabling even a small group to tap into a much wider social and clan-based network. In the early days of what was a predominantly peaceful uprising, bands of army defectors across the country were turning away the civilians volunteering to join their ranks, in a bid to maintain some semblance of military hierarchy and discipline. Now, in amateur videos posted on YouTube, some units are openly calling for civilian volunteers.

Colonel Kurdi insists that's not part of the FSA's general strategy. Critics counter that a command based in Turkey cannot dictate terms to men fighting and dying in their homeland. Kurdi responds that military commanders the world over need not necessarily be based in an area to issue orders. "A command can be anywhere, in a city, in a town," he says. "In any military command, orders are issued via communications. we count on these communications."

They also count on weapons entering clandestinely from neighboring countries including Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq, as well as what Kurdi terms the "regime's smuggling gangs" that sell weapons to defectors. Syria was not a weaponized society, unlike Iraq where gun ownership was common before the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime. Still, after almost 11 months of being shot at, some Syrians have found ways to protect themselves and start shooting back. A Syrian expatriate and human rights activist who works closely with refugees in Jordan said that every Syrian man who has fled across the border was "FSA in waiting." Kalashnikovs were going for about $1,600 each, he said (about half the price of those sold on the black market in Lebanon). Most of the men go back into Syria, the activist said, as soon as they secure a weapon. (VIDEO: Why They Protest: Egypt, Libya and Syria)

Kodmani says that unifying armed groups on the ground "is the big challenge today." Although the SNC had not been quick to endorse the FSA, insisting on peaceful rather than military means to bring down the regime, it has since come out in support of the armed defectors, offering to find it funding but not weapons. "There is going to be more of a role for the FSA in the continuation of the struggle against the regime," Kodmani says, adding that support for the FSA is predicated "first and foremost" on "helping integrate those [armed] groups that if not integrated might operate on the ground, which is a concern. It's not about throwing money and arms at them, it's first and foremost about unifying them under one command."

Syrians don't have to look far to see how militias, especially those with a sectarian hue, can ravage a country: neighboring Lebanon and Iraq are bloody examples of that. They are also examples of the price proxy wars can extract from a local population. The international battle lines over Syria are clearly drawn. Russia and Iran continue to politically back and arm Assad, while Qatar is leading the Arab charge against the regime, along with Turkey, the U.S, France and other Western powers.

There is much talk that Qatar -- which financed, armed and trained Libya's rebels -- may do the same for Syria's. Kurdi wouldn't be drawn on whether that had moved from notion to fact, saying only that the FSA needed weapons to "at least make us on par with the regime."

Neon Custom Signs Create a Unique Advertising Look for Your ...

Author:

Caitlin Coon

When it comes to making a choice for your business advertisements, it\?s important that you aim to be unique. There\?s no room to settle for ordinary and commonplace advertising materials that wouldn\?t help to set you apart from other businesses within your area. Neon signs, for example, are widely used by many business owners to promote their establishments to the people passing by in the streets. These signs can be easily purchased as pre-fabricated models which you can instantly bring with you and affix right outside your store. However, following the same path that everyone is doing would not reflect well for your business. It\?s essential, therefore, that when you choose neon advertising for your commercial space, you better resort to the neon custom signs.

Opting for neon custom signs is a wise decision because you can easily create a unique advertising look. You are given free rein to make your own design and such will greatly help to make your advertisement appear different from the others. With a completely different look, people will find them more eye-catching and this can be of tremendous help to put more awareness about your business for the buying public.

People passing by would no longer mistake your store for another one that is lined up in your street. You conveniently create a very distinctive sign that people will only associate with your business. By simply resorting to these signs, your business forms an identity of its own.

Getting neon custom signs can also help you convey the necessary information that you want your customers to know. Normally, when you buy from neon stores, you\?ll find already made open signs and signs that bear the type of establishment like bar, salon or spa. In other times, the type of product is advertised like pizza, ice cream or cake, or perhaps, it may be the services offered like tattoo, facial or tax service. When you get your units customized, you can also add your store\?s name so that even from afar your customers will come to know your establishment\?s name. If you are selling cakes, for example, you can also specifically put in your specialty so that customers instantly know what your best-sellers are.

Custom signs are understandably priced higher compared to standard units. However, the ability to make design tweaks that will match your store\?s personality can be highly valuable. You can convey any detail you wish and make your sign totally different from the others. In a way, paying a higher price for them can be deemed really worthwhile.

(AP) ? Stressed out by flying?

Travelers in Northern California can now find their inner calm in the Yoga Room at San Francisco International Airport.

The quiet, dimly lit studio officially opened last week in a former storage room just past the security checkpoint at SFO's Terminal 2.

Airport officials believe the 150-square-foot (14-square-meter) room with mirrored walls is the world's first airport yoga studio, said spokesman Mike McCarron.

The room, open to all ticketed passengers, contains a few chairs and yoga mats but no instructors or televisions. No shoes, food, drinks or cell phones are allowed.

"Silence is appreciated," says a sign spelling out "Yoga Room Etiquette."

A prominent blue-and-white sign with a Buddha-like pictogram beckons visitors: "Come check out our Yoga Room."

Frequent flyer Maria Poole accepted the invitation, practicing a downward dog asana and other yoga poses before boarding her flight.

"It's perfect," said Poole, 47, of Lafayette. "I think it should be in every airport, especially the terminals that I fly through. This would be such a great way for me to get my exercise in, get a little peace and quiet ? a little Zen moment."

The Yoga Room is just the latest example of how airports are trying to improve the passenger experience and showcase their regional culture, noting the ancient practice's popularity in the San Francisco Bay area, said Debby McElroy, executive vice president of Airports Council International-North America.

In recent years, airports have upgraded their food and shopping venues and added massage parlors, nail salons, dry cleaners and pet hotels, McElroy said, but SFO is the first to add a yoga room in North America and probably the world.

"I expect other airports will be looking at whether a yoga room at their airport makes sense," McElroy said.

SFO officials say the idea came from a passenger who checked out the newly remodeled terminal last year and told Airport Director John Martin it was lacking one thing: a yoga room.

Martin, a long-time yoga practitioner, agreed. Airport managers spent $15,000 to $20,000 to turn the storage space into the yoga studio.

SFO officials had to design the Yoga icon after they couldn't find one in the international guide of airport pictograms that direct travelers to taxis, restrooms and baggage claim carousels.

Lindsey Shepard of Fremont, who was traveling with Poole, said she liked having "a dark place to chill out and have a timeout and relax."

"Flying can be stressful," Shepard said. "It's nice to have something to do at the airport besides sit around and eat bad food and read magazines."

Of course, the Yoga Room isn't for everyone.

"If I got into yoga, I might lose track of time and miss my flight," said Robert Diaz, 52, of Seal Beach, who was visiting San Francisco with his wife. "I'd be so relaxed."

Fresh iPhone Apps for Feb. 6: Vanity Fair Hollywood, Game Your Video, Tank Battalion Blitz, Order Up!! To Go (Appolicious)

It?s almost time for this year?s Academy Awards, so get primed up for your Oscar ballot with Vanity Fair Hollywood, an app full of information about the nominees so you can make informed picks. After you?re done thinking about the best in Hollywood, you can make videos of your own with effects app Game your Video. In games, we?ve got Tank Battalion Blitz, a top-down tank battling game that includes offline and online multiplayer play. After that, there?s Order Up!! To Go, a time-management restaurant game that uses gesture controls for your cooking.

With the days left before this year?s Academy Awards dwindling away, you can put all your Oscar winner predictions in one place using Vanity Fair Hollywood. The app brings you all the information you need about each Oscar category to make your own predictions and fill out your Oscar ballot, like the list of nominees, trailers from each film, and information about each nominee in every category.

Vanity Fair also brings you a little extra information that gives you an edge over your friends. The app will show you how many people using the app are voting for which nominees, so you can get an idea of how other people see each category. It also ties you into Vanity Fair?s Twitter feed so you can follow the magazine and its editors as the awards draw closer.

You?ve shot videos on your iPhone, you?ve got some great ideas and you?re seeing your chance to become famous on YouTube. Now you need to edit your footage, which you can do using Game your Video. The app makes it easy to adjust your film and add affects, using the kind of controls you?d expect to see in a video game.

Game your Video has a number of effects to be applied to your videos. You can choose the ?flavor? of your video by choosing the best combination of visuals and sound for the atmosphere you?re trying to achieve. There are also a number of video and audio effects that can be added on their own, including motion effects to give your videos an action-packed feel.

Jump in a tank and take on other commanders in Tank Battalion Blitz. It?s a top-down game in which you join a squad of tanks to blast another group of tanks. Over time, you?ll gather up more and more tanks into your arsenal, using them to take down your enemies both offline and on.

Tank Battalion Blitz includes multiple game modes, including offline single-player against the computer and online and local multiplayer, so you can take on your friends or players from all over the world. The game includes authentic tanks for you to gather, plus Game Center support for leaderboards, achievements and friends lists.

Time management game Order Up!! To Go puts you in the kitchen at a restaurant to start filling orders. You?ll start out in a fast food restaurant, working to flip burgers, cook fries and fill drinks in order to get everything done as quickly as possible. Each food item you make has different degrees of quality, requiring you to cook them the right way and for the right amount of time to get the best score possible.

Order Up!! Also mixes up the time management genre by throwing in touch controls that require you to think about what you?re doing a little more than other similar games. You?ll need to use gesture controls to flip burgers and lower fries into the fryer, for example. As the game advances, you?ll cook your way through multiple different restaurants and buy new tools with the money you earn along the way.

Patently-O Bits & Bytes by Lawrence Higgins - Patent Law Blog ...

USPTO Hoteling Report

  • The US Department of Commerce recently performed an audit and evaluation of the USPTO's Hoteling program. The report shows that the average Patent Hoteling Program (PHP) examiner spends 66.3 more hours a year examining patents than does the average in-house examiner (which translates to reviewing about 3.5 more patent applications a year. However, the report shows that PHP participants are no more efficient at reviewing patent applications than individuals at the USPTO headquarters. At the end of the fiscal year 2011 over 2,600 patent examiners were Hoteling. To be able to participate in the PHP an examiner must be GS-12 or above, worked at least 2 years at the USPTO, passed the certification exam (essentially the Patent Bar), & currently not under any warnings. U.S. House introduces bill to amend design patent law

  • The proposed House bill, known as the Promoting Automotive Repair, Trade, and Sales (PARTS) Act, would reduce the time period when auto manufacturers are able to enforce design patents on collision repair parts against alternative suppliers from 14 years to 30 months. The bill claims that it would save Americans money on car parts, by removing auto manufacturer monopolies from the equation. [Link]

Can University Tech Transfer save the Pharma Industry?

  • The pharmaceutical industry has been hit hard by the fall in revenue because of expiring patents. Pfizer's profit declined 50% because of Lipitor going into the public domain. Eli Lilly's profit dropped 27% because of Zyprexa going generic. AstraZeneca revenue declined and they plan to lay off 7,350 people, because Nexium fell out of patent protection in Europe. Also, later this year Plavix and Singulair will face competition, which will probably cause those companies' profits to drop. With all of these multi- billion dollar patents expiring, it seems that pharma companies need new compounds and drugs to increase profit. I think that Universities will be the key to the pharma industry. Universities have many patents waiting to be licensed by big companies that could be very profitable for both the University and the company. The problem that I see is that there is a lack of communication between companies and Universities. Most University Tech Transfer offices are limited in what they can do, and if they do not have an inside connection at a company, it is difficult to market an invention to a big company. This problem can be overcome in many ways; however it would seem that an intermediary may be needed. An intermediary would be of great value if they can connect pharma companies (or companies in general) with University Tech Transfer offices to help broker a deal. While this is not a new idea in the patent world, I do not think that many universities currently use individuals from the outside to help get technology licensed. [Link]
